Penny Training 9th July.
« on: July 09, 2011, 03:10:50 PM »

This is Penny today, we are working on step up and touching a stick.  Touching the stick is fine, step up is a little more tricky......watch out for the killer bite, you can see what I mean, there is no warning!

   Well done Penny and yeah can see what you mean about no warning, Bilbo does not give a warning he just bites, strange because I know when Frodo's going to as he gives some sort of warning, oh well complex creatures these Parrots

Be thankful you're not bleeding.
I was doing some training with Bilbo the other day and he was on a perch of about 4ft, all was going well until he decided no more, and how did I know that you may ask, well because out of nowhere he lunged and bit me just above my lip and below my nose.. OUCH, tears were streaming down my face and blood dripping in to my mouth  :cry2: :cry2:
Lesson learned is for me to either grow so we are not at almost the same height or get a lower perch for training.
When Stevie got home and saw my face, he was shocked.

ooooo Julie, always have them chest height or below for training.  Hope your lip is ok now, that could have been really nasty x

Yes, the best time is after the big poop and before breakfast, then they will work a lot easier.  Then again before their supper is a good time.  No more than about 10 - 15 minutes at a time otherwise they will get fed up, you will get frustrated and it will all end on a bad note.  Always end on a high so that they look forward to training again.

I just realised, Charlie at one point was sat on his perch watching and waving hahahah. Around 7:47 on the time counter.  I gave him little bits of grape as well, didn't want him left out.

Yes thanks Pat the lips much better and Stevie is going to take some of the bottom off the perch I use for their training, since I don't think I'll get any taller. Oooo I'd love to be 5ft 2in, I would feel soooo tall

  Well done Pat thats brilliant (apart from the bite).

Penny reminds me so much of Jenny, she would lunge and bite hard.....very hard, chunks of flesh removed. It took me a year to get her to step up onto my hand to get her out of her cage. I got her onto a perch after about two weeks having done the touch thing. You will get there and i do think it helps having a very tame bird as well as jealousy is a wonderful training tool

Can you not leave it downloading overnight then watch it in the morning?

Because of the risk of fire or because it ain't good for it?

If it's the former then just think how many other things you leave plugged in

Because of the bloody cost, I'm a skinflint

No seriously because I have heard bad things about chargers overheating with disastrous results  :panic: :panic:

James plugged in his charger for his last but one lappy and there was a spark and a small flame and it refused to work after that. :( 50 for a new charger  :grumble: :grumble:

she is doing so well, or you are doing with her so well!    that lunge wasn't nice though  :panic: the thing though is that sometimes they reach for you to test whether your arm is steady and don't actually want to bite. I am used to pulling my hand away as I dont like pain at all  but since Digby doesn't really bite me I am more calm now and when he reaches like that he only is trying if i am a good steady perch. Though I am sure Penny was going for the bite

To be honest, she has never just reached to test the "perch" she always just goes in for the kill.  Charlie reaches out to test things though so I know what you mean. I tried a tea towel, she didn't like that either......I'm going to try a natural perch, more of a branch really and see if that is better than the dowel perch I was trying to get her to stand on.  It's all time and patience, I'm sure she'll get there.
