Poop poop and more poop
« on: May 23, 2015, 10:03:02 AM »

hi guys. Please could I have some advice on how to train Smokey to poop in one place. My poor husband is being driven mad by bird poop all over the place. I know I should have done this sooner and now it will be hard work but I would love him to just poop in a particular place. Any advice please.
Thank you

Hi Strawbs

I can't say 100% Mamadou is toilet trained as I would like but I do know through some weird testing I did when I was off work last year for a few months, and that was he pooh's roughly every 17mins so now and back then when I did the 'testing' I put him on his stand as the 17min mark was approaching and then said "go a pooh" like I say he doesn't only do it on his stand he does do it in his cage and the first one of the day is usually the worst. The one thing Mamadou has never done is poohed mid flight I don't know if he ever would maybe a more experienced member can tell you if they would do that but I think it's probably possible to a degree to train him to go in one place but of course just remember if your little one isn't near that place he won't likely hold it I think funnily enough there was a post a long time back about something similar and some owners was saying that there birds won't go in certain places I could be getting confused so don't hold me to that but yeah give it a go when your bird poohs time it to the next pooh, failing that it's just me being really weird

I've heard that people train them but it can cause problems where the bird will only poop when it's told to. What I started to do was say 'need a poo' every time Yvie poops and now she often says 'need a poo' before she does it. Then I can be prepared to catch it with my baby wipe. Or hold her over a bin/newspaper.

Unfortunately though it's part of having a grey,  trust me, having a smaller bird is much worse, they poo constantly :D

Love to say got it as high as 90%. We use 'where's yours'. Presently training mine to go back to the cage which is done about 90% of the time from certain spots. Otherwise they go to the perch. Yet still got 3/4 spots that just aren't good. Outside tend to find they hold out for ages, but Willow will go if asked and wants/needs to go and wants to be on a shoulder.

Only just started with cage so can be done when they're older. Not really asking them to go but rewarding when they go in the right place.

We have trained KIKI to go on top of the cage, but sometimes an accident happens.

Titch will go as soon as her cage is opened in the morning. It's the worst one of the day.
I have had very few accidents with her, sometimes she flies back to the cage when she wants to go. If she's on the back of my dining chair when i'm working i do need to put tissue down first! It really stains the carpet.  :nono:
