Step up
« on: February 05, 2012, 06:52:51 PM »

Hi all,

Jack has really settled in well now, so I think the time is right to start some training.  As he's 7, I know its gonna take a little longer.  He's never been taught to step up.  I just got a DVD from my dad who trained his Amazon using it, and it seemed to work for him.  However, the training technique for step up was using two small perches.  I tried this but Jack is petrified of the perches (even though he sits on something similar all day long)

So, i guess I need you guys' help as I don't know where to start!  Any ideas or tips welcome.

Thanks in advance ppl.

I used the perch charlie was sitting on in the beginning. I took it out of the cage and then put it back after a bit of training. Yes its a bit complicated but my charlie doesnt like anything new.
hopefullt someone have a bit easier tips:))>:D:))

Thanks Eli,

I tried using his perches as well, but he's scared of them too!  I'm determined to crack this though!

No he won't step up at all, he Just turns around or runs off!  I think the idea of the perches are that they are gradually phased out.  But he's petrified of them!

You say he has settled in well, how long have you had him?  He might have settled in well to his house and the routine etc but he obviously hasn't built up a strong enough trust with you yet to step up onto your hand.  That will come with time, patience and a lot of treats and coaxing.
