Step Up From Different Locations
« on: November 30, 2011, 03:33:16 AM »

Ok, I have a TAG, Otis. When he takes the occasional, "Accidental" flights in the house, he won't step up for me. He will try to bite and then toddles off to find his cage and climbs up. Then he stays in his cage, almost like he's pouting.
I have laid on the floor with him for almost an hour and a half trying to get him to step up to get him back to his cage. It like he gets a little aggressive. Any ideas? :egg

when you say "accidental flights" do you mean he has fell or been spooked?
if this is the case and you are rushing to him, he may be associating the "fall /hurt" with you, so maybe its best to at least give him a few mins to think about what just happened  that way you wont get the blame  :nono:

Does he get a treat when he steps up. How have you been trying to get him to step up?

He steps up, from his cage. And I haven't had him that long, only since June.
He didn't step up at all when I got him. He's about 6-8yrs old.
He all of a sudden will take flight in the house. He is not clipped and always supervised when he is out. You are right about rushing over to him. I am a nervous mom when that happens I go quickly to where he is.
I don't want to clip, I have two others that are not clipped and they do just fine.

Hello,

I'm a little bit confused about what you mean by accidental flight?
Does he fly regularly in the house or has he been cage bound and isn't a good flier?

Step up can take some time, if he is in a strange place and feels insecure he might not be brave enough to step up.
Best to practice away from his cage but when things are nice and calm. Definitely give him a treat when he gets it right.

If he gets spooked and flies and crashes or lands in a stange place just leave him be for a couple of minutes, just observe to make sure he hasn't been hurt, then just talk gently to him - let him adjust to where he is. It's fine if he toddles back on his own (at least until you have the step up sorted out under normal circumstances).

Good luck!

Thanks, I am not sure what makes him launch. He doesn't do it that often, but when he does... He's a good flyer, due to the fact that he was actually flying the streets in central Florida. We don't have much back story on him. He was with a foster mom for a year did not get the proper training. Who ever lost this guy spent a lot of time with training him words and songs. He has a huge vocabulary, and song selection.
He came "pre-loaded"
