Stick Training For A Bird That Hates Me - Penny!
« on: April 25, 2012, 10:22:10 AM »

Penny is one of our African Greys, she hates me!  We have had her for 10 months now, I started to do training with her when she first arrived here but it was obvious that she didn't like me, so I left her, just did the normal everyday things with her and talked to her lots.  Now, 10 months down the line she still hates me, so I thought I'd try training again to maybe build a bond...this is her first training session in 10 months, so we'll see how she goes.  As you can see, she is a plucker, she started growing her feathers back after arriving here and a change of diet, toys etc etc.  Then my other Grey escaped from his cage one day when she was out playing and dive bombed her, she nipped her lovely new feathers off and we are back to square one, but...there is hope, she is healthy and it is just a habit, so she might stop it one day.  Even if she doesn't....I still love her to bits.

It's difficult to know what to do with her in the way of training without being able to touch her, but I'm going to stick with this for a little while and see how she goes.  I might manage to get her to wave or something later lol.

To get her on the stand is a feat in itself hahaha.  She can't fly so she climbs everywhere.  The parrot stand is on wheels, so I wheel it as close as I can to her door, then she climbs out onto the top of her cage door, I tempt her with a bit of peanut and she climbs down onto the perch......that's on a good day, on a bad day..........she totally ignores me and goes to the top of her cage where she will sit and growl at me.

That's brilliant Pat, there's hope for me and Charlie Boy

I was also going to ask about how you got her on the play stand

My play stands are on wheels and whenever I wheel it to Charlie Boy, he goes "nuts" screams, screeches, lunges and tries to attack me if his doors open, so for now I think I'll keep working with him via the landing platform as my wounds on my hands are starting to heal

Yeah, Charlie didn't like the playstand at first, I kept trying to get him to stand on it and he would fly away but I did the same thing as I tell everybody when trying to get them back into the cage.  I took him close enough until I felt him tense and then stopped and walked away...kept doing that until I plonked him on it one day and there he stayed.  Now he sits on it quite happily while I do the dishes or whatever.  Penny on the other hand can be bribed to do most things with a peanut.

Great advice Pat, that's the advice I followed for getting mine in their cages
I never had a problem with any of mine going on Play stands etc, it's just Charlie Boy who is a little "problematic"
Bribery does not work so far, the only way I seem to make progress is with extremely slow movements, gentle talking etc
But I'm sure we'll get there with him, he's come on so much when you think about it and it's only been two and a half months.
I think a lot of patience is the key with Charlie Boy. Maybe in ten months he'll be happy to do stick training too

Yeah, you know what works and what doesn't with your birds, the same as Penny and Charlie, they are like chalk and cheese.  Charlie is really outgoing and shouts a lot (don't know where he gets that from ) Penny on the other hand is quieter and likes to be left alone for the most part.

Fantastic video pat. Thank you. I may get to try that with George one day. He's frightened of fingers ATM or anything that goes near his cage so we will see how he goes but it's very early days yet for George bless him.  :cheekkiss:

Pat / Mandy

your stick training video was amazing - Sydney has a phobia of sticks from previous owners / dealings - i wanted to try this out and whilst he still reacts negatively to even a thin willow stick - i have adapted this training process by using a light green plastic pen and i reinforce the training every day.

many thanks
