Tips for making parrot more friendly.
« on: March 25, 2013, 07:10:08 PM »

I had my grey at the vet today to get his feathers checked to see if he was ok (those who saw my post on this will know why I'm on about). So in short the vet was a wee bit worried about how aggressive he got. He said that I should be doi more to socialise him. I am at a bunt of a loss as to how to do this and make him a bit more friendly. His cage is open every night so he can come out and we talk to him whenever we can. He sometimes steps up onto my finger when he feels like it but its strictly on his terms. You never know when he's going to bite.

For me, most stuff has to be done on their terms. My Ammie perfers my husband, I will go up to her, crook my finger and say tickle tickle, if she lowers her head and raises her crest feathers, she's happy for a tickle, if not then I don't force her.
I think that creates a start for the trust building.
It's about getting to know your birds likes and dislikes
Offering treats will help, but also vocal praising will help lots too.
I tend to vocally praise my lot rather than treat rewarding

The tickle thing sounds exactly what mine does. Mine does not really accept treat from the hand which is a bit annoying as it makes the whole situation more difficult.

Just try and praise vocally then

Talk to him lots, don't force him to do anything he doesn't want to (unless he's in danger or being naughty). It can take a long time, so try not to worry

Rusty, there's a vid somewhere of Pat training with penny her grey
The point im makin is, she can't offer penny a treat by hand as she would loose a finger
Try and work out your greys fave treat, wether it be a nut or a certain seed
Anyways only use this for training, removin from his feed for a time, if he doesn't except out your hand , drop it in his bowl and let him see you do this
