Too old?
« on: March 15, 2017, 05:17:29 PM »

So, they Grey I recently added to my family is 19 years old. So far she has grown very close to me, but bites and screeches at everyone else. I was told she used to be a very affectionate, talkative bird. Now she just uses whistles and screeches, even with me. Does anyone have any advice on how to get her back to talking, and to get her more comfortable with the rest of the family? She's been with me a 8 months now, so I don't think it's just the shock of a new environment anymore. Is she just too old to train?

Hi and welcome
Can I ask what kind of diet she is on ?
Does she have toys ? Come
Out the cage ?
UV lighting ?
All these answers will help us determine what else you can try xx

I am currently working on switching her over to pellets. Her previous owner had her mostly on a cheap parrot food that was mostly seeds, and did not let her out of the cage that often. She has lots of toys but usually only plays with her ropes or wooden blocks. She comes out of her cage fine and likes to walk around on the floor and climb and also has no problem riding around on my arm. She has no special lighting, I didn't know they needed any :(

Here's a link to a suitable lamp
http://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/avian-sun-lamp-starter-kit
They really do need them ,
Near a window doesn't count despite many thinking it's a suitable alternative
Other than that I think your doin fine :)

Yep a change of diet ,and UV light could see a significant change here .Plus it's hormonal time and our hen doesn't talk much when the hormones are raging.Does she accept been sprayed?

Thanks! I'll order a lamp for her. She will tolerate getting sprayed with the water bottle, but she does NOT like it. She also does not like using any sort of bird bath or dish for bathing. I have seen her dunk her head in her water bowl before, but she is adamantly against literally any other bathing method. She will put up with me using a spray bottle if I bribe enough XD
