Training Video #2 A New Trick.
« on: February 17, 2011, 11:51:34 AM »

I've been wanting to teach Charlie something new but couldn't figure out what to do with him.  I
like to keep things to movements that he would  do naturally.  This morning he gave me an idea, he had his toys out playing and I was watching him hanging upside down on the "clothes airer" when I thought about trying to get him to tumble right the way around.  This video is the very first time I asked him to do it.  He'd never heard the word "Tumble" before, (apart from Mr
Tumble on CBeebies) I'd literally just seen him do it, grabbed Darryl with the recorder and went
for it.  Next time we do it, I'll get Darryl to record it again and you can see how long it takes him to do it properly.  It will also give you an idea of how to start off training your Grey to do tricks. Notice how the "touch" for the stick comes into play as well, to get him into the position I want. Keep it short sessions so that they don't get fed up, you don't become impatient and it's still fun for you both. This session was just over 3 minutes long, plenty long enough for the first time. Please excuse my pj's, as I said, it was very much spur of the moment thing! I hadn't even cleaned up the kitchen or his cage! hahahaha.

    glad it helped.  Don't expect her to play the game for too long, just 5 or 10 minutes to start with and always, always end on a high otherwise she will remember it as a bad experience and won't want to do it again.
