What else?
« on: January 14, 2013, 05:33:44 PM »

Hi Everyone,

Ive had Rocky 3 months now and training is going well,

wanted some tips on what else i can train him?

he does

- step up
- drop (2p coin into bowl on comand)
- high five
- kisses with his beak
- touch the stick

I wanted to train him to fly but hes struggling because his wings look like they were clipped before i got him (although hes eager, many crash landings!!)

also with talking i cant train him yet as he will only talk when we are out of the room! and i dont want to come back in and treat him everytime he talks, as im worried he will think ill return everytime he talks!

any tips would be much appreciated

thanks

Hannah

Hmmm turn circle ....
PAAAAAAATTTT
Maybe you put a treat behind him
And get him to turn to get it ??
I think it's more waiting to see them do something , give it a 'name' and praise ??
What about a wave??
Or when he stretches his wings 'superman' ??
You just gotta watch him
Pats first trick with Charlie was 'shake it on down' it was Charlie shakin his tail
He now does it on command :yahoo:
Will rocky 'dance'
That's one iv mastered with all 5 of mine

 :run  I'm here!

You are doing well with him.  Just watch what he does and when he does something you like, give it a word and stick with that word.  I got Charlie turning around because he half turned around and I said "Good boy, turn around!" tempted him with a little bit of nut and then eventually he turned around, it's ok to kind of help him around by steering him with his tail, just put your finger on the side of his tail and he'll turn around to see what you are doing, hey presto!  You don't need to do anything really, other  than watch what he does.  Another of Charlie's tricks is to drop when you shoot him, well that started off because he hangs upside down a lot (thinks he's a bat) so I waited for him to drop and a split second before he did, I said "Bang" he dropped, I praised him up and gave him a treat.  Watching his actions is the best way and then when he does something you think you can build on, a split second before he does it, say the word you want to use, praise him up etc etc.  He'll soon get the message.  You only have a 10 minute window to train a couple of times a day before he will get fed up and you will get frustrated.  The best time to do it is in the morning, after the big poop and before breakfast, so that he is a little hungry and willing to work for a treat, then again just before his tea.  Always end on a high with giving him a jackpot treat and loads of praise so that he will want to do it again when he comes out next time.  Never overwork him so he gets fed up because he will get to hate training.   Hope that helps.

Waving is simple, go to do a High Five but instead of touching his foot, hold your hand up and say wave!  He'll soon get that.

That's the way to do it, a little bit each day, they enjoy it.   It's the interaction and just playing with them really, it's all part and parcel of the bonding.  Have you seen the video that I put up with me playing with Charlie?

We've had him since he was 14 weeks old, he'll be 4 in June this year.  He is so good with both of us to be honest, but it's me that does all the work with Charlie, my partner Darryl just does the photos and filming lol.   Charlie will go to Darryl with no problem and sit on his arm etc. but Darryl is more wary of him for some reason.  Penny our other Grey is all for Darryl, he loves her and she loves him.  I wouldn't dream of going near Penny, she'd take the skin from my bones lol.   It takes a little while to build up the trust but the more you play with him the more he will trust you.  You really have to be careful though because one slip and it could set you back a way, they spook very easily, so if you are going to play like I was with Charlie, don't be hesitant at all, be confident in your approach then they think there is nothing to be afraid of.  If you are nervous about playing like that, that makes the bird nervous and it will be a lot harder for him to learn to trust you.

I don't know if you realise, but stroking a bird on their back is a sexual thing to them and should be avoided or you will have trouble when they get frustrated when they are sexually mature.   Although I hold Charlie on his back, it is more him lying on my hand than being stroked.

yes ill be careful of that,

Rocky already does a funny dance and lowers his wings to me... i think maybe this is a mating sign?!

you are 100% right they do seem to know if you are not confident and it does spook them,

Rocky is quite jumpy still, so just taking it slowly! trying to train him to go in the travel box but he wont go in, so im just going to leave it there open and see if he goes in by himself!
