Rocky – Love Is In The Air

August 7th, 2012
Rocky - Love Is In The Air

Rocky is doing very well, he’s is eating well, playing well, and screaming extremely well. He still hates the hubby and I, but we don’t mind. He seems very settled and happy :D

He shares his cage with my OWA who is very timid around other birds, but other the past few weeks she has learned to realised that Rocky is a friendly boy who won’t cause her any harm. She has become more confident with Rocky and has even started preening him!!! It’s soooooooooooooooo lovely to watch :)

Poor Rocky was a little unsure of what my OWAs intentions were at first, after all he’s spent the last few months being growled at and being bitten by her because she was so scared of him, but he’s slowly starting to relax when she approaches him, and thoroughly enjoyed being preened by her yesterday :)

I’m so glad I put them together, because my gut instinct told me they would get along eventually, and my gut was right :)

I think this is the start of something beautiful :D

Rocky – He’s Becoming A Chunky Monkey!!

Rocky - He's Becoming A Chunky Monkey!!

Rocky is coming along in leaps and bounds, he’s been eating well for almost 2 months now, and has put on some much needed weight!! :)
He was first weighed shortly after his arrival, and weighed 475g, which is very low considering his such a big boy, now he weighs 550g, which is fantastic but still under a healthy weight range for his size, the aim now is to get him up to 600g or more. Hopefully this wont be too difficult as he’s eating is increasing slowly but surely :)

Rocky shares a cage with my other Amazon, and he seems to enjoy her company, they do bicker a little bit, but he adores her, and they both get noisy and loud together when they decide to kick off!! He has also realised that he has some stiff competition for her affections too……… My hubby!!!
I’ve recently had an operation which has meant that my hubby has had to become the birds main carer, and whenever my hubby is around my other Amazon, she comes alive, and is very flirty with him. Of course Rocky has clocked on to this, and now charges and tries to bite the hubby at every opportunity!! :P

Rocky seems to dislike both my hubby and I (the hubby more so), and whenever I try to get him to step-up, he will pretend to grab my finger with his foot, then STRIKE FOR A BITE!!! However, this does not phase me in the slightest, and I now make a little game of this, as soon a he attempts to step-up, with my other hand I will tickle the back of his legs, I will also offer him a toy to bite into as a distraction tactic :P
Although he gets frustrated because he can’t catch me quick enough to bite me, he does enjoy it, and as a result, I’ve been able to give a lot more tickles to him. There are times where I do actually need him to step-up, and on those occasions I simply take the bite because so far in my experience of the birds I have, there’s no bite harder or more painful than a Cockatoos!!! :P
SORRY ROCKY, YOU’RE JUST GOING TO HAVE TO TRY HARDER!! :P

Rocky, is now a well established member of our family and flock and I adore him, he’s so gorgeous, and I’m over the moon with his progress!! :D

Rocky – The Little Piggy!!

Rocky - The Little Piggy!!

Well, I think we’ve finally cracked the whole eating or not eating saga, Rocky has decided he is a Harrison’s birdie!!! :)

He’s been tried on a variety, ZuPreem, Harrison’s, Animalzone, and for a while he appeared to like the Animalzone, but then after a few weeks he didn’t seem to be eating as much. So I decided to add some Harrison’s High Potency Fine with the Animalzone, and notice he was eating more of the Harrison’s on each feed. I now offer him the the Harrison’s, but because he shares a cage with my other Amazon, he has the option of eating Animalzone and ZuPreem if he wishes, as that’s what my other Amazon eats.

So far, he is eating better than I have ever seen, and on one occasion I had to top his bowl up with MORE FOOD!!! :)
Since his eating has improved he is not as noisy, which could also be down to his hormones settling too, but there’s definitely less noise, he’s still a noisy boy though!! :P

Rocky loves his cage mate, he still hates me but adores my other Amazon, so I’m pleased regardless. He has such a great character and can be so funny, even when he’s trying to rip my face off!!!
He now has Java stands to play on, 3 to be exact, he struggles with larger branches as he needs to build his muscles, but on the smaller branches he’s fine, he just needs to learn to manoeuvre around the stands to get to food bowls. I’m sure in time he will figure it out :)

Overall, he is doing great, I’m very proud of him, he’s such a gorgeous boy, he’s forgiven for all his aggressiveness because he is such a stunner, and I think he knows it too!!!!!! :P

Rocky – Noisy Boy!

Rocky - Noisy Boy!

Well, Rocky has well and truly settled in, and is now one very noisy boy :)

He is quite aggressive at the moment but I am putting it down to hormones as it breeding season, which may also explain the noise too.

Thankfully I have no neighbours where Rocky is, so his noise is not a problem, and it doesn’t bother me.
He is madly in love with my other Amazon, but because he is soooo noisy he makes her even more scared of him, but he won’t hurt her and hopefully in time she’ll realise that, and he’ll quieten down a little :)

Next week he is getting his own Java Tree, which I’m hoping will help him build his muscles, as he will be climbing more, and have branches of different thickness to climb, grip, and balance on.

He is quite a character, and at the moment he is determined to rip my face off at every opportunity, but again, this does not bother me in the slightest. He doesn’t like the other birds apart from my other Amazon, and even chased my male Grey off his cage, and rightly so too!!

He seems quite happy, and is even happier when my other Amazon is by him, so once the spring hormonal period is over it will be interesting to see how he’s character changes.

Like my other Amazon, Rocky loves his showers, he dances and gets silly, which is lovely to watch :)

He seems to be eating more too, but I haven’t been able to weigh him, as my scales need a new battery, so once I get a new one, I’ll weigh him.

I think he is great, and I love him to bits, even if he doesn’t feel the same :P

Rocky The Rock Star!

Rocky The Rock Star!

Well, Rocky has been with us almost a month now, he has settled in really well.
He has been cleared of PBFD and Psittacosis, but the vet did confirm that he is underweight.

I have managed to convert Rocky to pellets, but he really does need to eat more, some days he eats really well, and other days he eats very little, but it’s a working progress, and we will keep trying. My vet seems to think he will be fine, so it’s just a case I’ve getting him to try more foods, and finding out what he likes.

Rocky hasn’t really taken to me or my hubby yet and is quite grumpy with us when he wants to be, which is no different to what my other Ammie was like when we first got her, so I’m not phased much to his disappointment :P
He seems to like the kids, and he loves the animals, especially our dog, he will climb down from his cage and follow her round the floor shouting hello :)
He can be handled, but at the moment it’s on his terms. He does have a habit of biting though, mainly on the face, it’s not hard, but because he does it over and over again, it can hurt. Luckily I have a little trick to stop him from doing it, so time will tell if he stops the biting. I have also managed to do some short sessions of Step-Up with him, which he does great, and I have also started doing some flapping exercises with him to help build his muscles as he is too weak to fly.

I took the plunge and have introduced him to my other Ammie, for Rocky it’s love at first sight, unfortunately my other Ammie is petrified of him, but hopefully she will realise in time that he is a gentle giant where she is concerned, and will accept him. He really does like her, and tries to show her by blowing her a kiss, and errrr by getting quite frisky!!!!! :o Lol

I don’t think Rocky is very noisy at all, he does make more frequent noises than my other Ammie and can get loud, but on the loudness scale my other Ammie wins hands down!!! :P

Overall he’s settled in well, and seems to be happy and plays with his toys really well. I hope he manages to build a bond with my other Ammie, because I really think that a birdie pal is just what he needs.

I think he’s great, and have nick named him Rocky The Rock Star, he has soooooo much potential, and I cannot wait to see him progress!! :)
