Ruby Ruby Ruby Ruby!!

June 7th, 2012
Ruby Ruby Ruby Ruby!!

Not much to update on Ruby really, she’s doing great, still love’s her toys, food, and still loves dancing to music.

She’s quite a feisty little madam at times, especially when she is chasing the other birds away!!
For a little one, she knows how to give it some!! :P

We are slowly introducing her to the Java trees, she is a little unsure of them at the moment because she likes the security of her cage, but hopefully in time she will learn to relax and enjoy playing on the trees.

Ruby – The Chewer

Ruby - The Chewer

Ruby is still doing great, still a happy little girl, and still whistling and dancing her little heart out.
We had a slight change around due to taking on another rescue, so we moved Ruby next to my Amazon’s tree which is in front of the window. Ruby loves it as she can see us when we’re in the kitchen, but the other side of Ruby’s cage is a plastic shelving unit where I keep food, bowls, newspapers etc. Ruby climbs down the side of the cage and chews whatever she can reach!! :)
On the bottom shelf I keep the newspapers, she climbs all the way down the side of her cage, chews them, then throws them around the floor :P
She chews the shelf itself, and basically anything she can reach.

When I spray her in the bathroom, she will also chew the shower curtain.
Of course she loves chewing her toys too, she just likes to chew everything else too!! :D

Next week she is having her very own Java Tree, and will be out on her tree for most of the day, this will give her more variety, and an opportunity to climb more and chew more, as she doesn’t like to leave her area, which at the moment is her cage. She doesn’t have to leave her tree, so should still feel safe, but will be able experience the branches of the tree which will be good for her legs :)

In the late afternoon she will then go back into her cage on her textured perches, which will keep her feet in good condition, so she’ll have the best of both worlds. If she’s happy to sleep on her tree she can, and she’ll just go back to her tree at bedtime. She has slept on top of her cage before so, I’m sure she’ll be happy sleeping on her tree as she loves being out.

Ruby Roo – Party Animal

Ruby Roo - Party Animal

Ruby’s doing great, she still eats like a piggy, and is such a happy little soul.
She loves being in the parrot room, and although she doesn’t really interact with the other birds, she loves whistling her tunes to them. She loves to be out, but doesn’t want to come away from her cage very often. She has climbed down onto the parrot room floor a few times to go exploring, but other than that she’s happy chewing her toys on top of her cage.
Ruby cannot fly because she chewed some of her flight feathers off, she has been a plucker since about the age of 2 – 3 years. I’m hoping that the chewed quills will moult out, and she lets her new feathers grow, as I would love to see her fly.

The biggest problem with Ruby, is that the girl just wants to parrrrrrrrteeeeeeeee!!!
When the other birds are ready for bed, Ruby is ready for a wild night on the tiles, and I swear if she was human, she would outdo me by a mile!!!!
This makes for quite a challenge when trying to get her to go to bed in the evenings, I assume this stems from her days as a pub parrot many years ago, it certainly adds to her already massive character!!! :D

She is an absolute star, and I adore her, she is such a tiny little girl with the biggest personality, she is an absolute joy to have, I wouldn’t be without her for the world :)

Little Ruby Roo!

Little Ruby Roo!

Well, another month has past since Ruby joined our family and flock, she’s settled in amazingly!!
She enjoys her toys, and plays with every single one!! I have introduced her to Birdie Bangles which she munches with minutes, she also likes to hold them with her right foot and bang them on the perch or cage…. Very cute to watch :)

Ruby loves music, and will bop and whistle away, she’s a little party animal, and seems to like all the 90s music the most, especially Steps and the Spice Girls!!!!! Must get a video of her getting her groove on!! ;)

She has put on more weight and now weighs 415g, she seems to like cooked veg more than fresh so far, and I am yet to try her on parrot mash but hopefully she will like it.

I think that Ruby has been plucking too long for her feathers to fully recover, she has the odd new feather growth but tends to pull them before they grow out of their sheath. Despite this, she has not plucked much at all, just the odd new feather and a few downy feathers.
Ruby had chewed some of her flights off before she came to me, and because she chewed at them, the remaining sheaths/quills tends to annoy her and she tends to preen/chew at the tatty ends, but hopefully these will fall out in time and she will allow her new flights to grow through. Despite the chewing of her flights her flying is improving and she even managed to take off from the floor the other week which was lovely to see. She doesn’t fly well, and tends to crash a lot, but as she gets stronger in flight her landings will get better.

Overall she’s doing brilliantly, and I’m very pleased with her, she’s a cracking little addition to our family, and I love her to bits :)
