I made the hour and half journey to Wendover Heights Veterinary Centre to see Steve Smith who is fantasic with exotics.

On taking her in she was excited and regurgitating to me while waiting in the waiting room bless her!! They took her through and she was given a anaesthetic so she could have her x-rays done, here are some photos of her having her x-ray.

When she was back round Steve called me through to have a chat about the x-rays she was a lot worse than we thought most of her long bones showed abnormalities the right and left humerus, left and right radius, keel, right coracoid and both tibiotarsi, The left leg was worse with entrapment of the extensor tendon and extreme extension of the intertarsal joint all of which he believes to have happened at about 2-6 weeks of life cause by poor diet!!

Here are the x-rays

As you can see it’s not a pretty site and to do a surgical repair it would require a significant operation breaking the bone in the bad leg implanting into a very small fragment and fixing the leg in a more normal position so it will be a big op if she has it.

I was told that there are always risk’s with things like this and it could happen that once Steve operates on her that the leg might just not take the pinning and shatter in which case she would be put to sleep, but it could go well, its a case of not knowing until he opens her leg up.

He also said that she could come home with some pain killers and see how she goes on them too and could live a life on them , I find it hard to see that she is in lots of pain as she is such a happy bird and so loving which makes it so much more harder what to do for the best!

I dearly would love to give her the chance of a fairly normal life and for her to be able to perch like any normal grey I think she deserves this, but then I have to look from the other angle and is it fair to put her through this?

If she has the Op we would need to raise funds to help Angel and pay for it as it will cost about £450 for the bad leg and maybe a bit less for the other leg so we would carry on Angels Appeal!

I need to sleep on it a few more times not that I can do much sleeping and I will update you all soon.

Rosie Loves To Explore!

Rosie Loves To Explore!

I thought it would be a good idea to update you all on how Rosie is doing as she’s been with us now for over a month.

Rosie is very loving and playful, she’s a good talker and has now started copying Frodo and Bilbo, she’s also now says Rosie, which is great, and both Frodo and Bilbo shout Rosie, which makes us laugh.
She’s very vocal in a morning and it now sounds like a competition is going on with the three of them, who can shout the loudest.

Rosie is a great eater and loves all her pellets, veg, fruit etc and she loves her herbal tea. She also loves to be sprayed, as soon as I say shower time, she climbs to her top perch and opens her wings so more of her can get wet.

We find it very weird that we have fallen so in love with her after such a short time, she’s a gorgeous bird who has stolen our hearts, it’s like she’s been here forever.

Although Rosie is still plucking and clipping her feathers, she does now have two red tail feathers and lots of pins on her chest so we know we’re on the right track with her, it’s just going to take a lot of time and patience which we have plenty of.

She loves to explore the play stands, the kitchen and toys and is still getting on well with Frodo and Bilbo when they are out together every day, although we still like to give all three birds individual out of cage time.

Photos to be added shortly as they are stuck on my dead hard drive!! Paula

Street Cred Or The Terribly Two’s?

Street Cred Or The Terribly Two's?

Well, Bailey has been with me now for little over 5 months and I think she’s settled in well. After her Houdini’ trick where she flew out of the window and escaped for four agonising days, I think she’s become a bit more ‘street wise’ after mixing with the other big birds in the ‘hood’. This escapade did set her back a bit and she has become a little more ‘detached’ from us. However, she still flies to land on your shoulder (or my head) if we’re standing up in the Kitchen or leaning against the work surface, but still wont step up at all or step onto our shoulders if we offer it to her next to her cage. She does like to land on my laptop lid which is annoying as her claws will go right through the screen (not sure how I could explain that one away with the laptop insurance? Is parrot damage covered?) so I try and move her off offering bits of treats but she has none of it and just flies back to her cage.

She comes out everyday, but will never play. All she wants to do it sit on top of her cage singing, squawking, barking at the dogs, demanding a bag of chips and chatting to me or to herself. I’ve hung some of her toys to the outside so that if she changes her mind, they are there for her.

Her favourite place to sit is on top of the kitchen cupboard where she has a great view. Here she just sits and sings etc too.
She is obviously happy and is eating well and drinking plenty of juice and water. She gives me so much pleasure and so many laughs at her antics and the things she says. Her latest phrase is ‘Peanuts, peanut, peanuuuuuuuuuts!’

I’m not sure what has happened to my last diary entry, it seemed to disappear after I posted it? So apologies for that.

Here is Bailey as my latest fashion accessory.

Angus Lastest Update.

Angus Lastest Update.

Angus is now part of a 3 bird flock since we have had a new addition and as yet I don’t think he’s sure what to think of a bird who dares to stick up to him!
One think he has done is dorm a double act with Oscar. Angus has perfected the sound of someone knocking on the door and Oscar shouts “come in” Angus shouts “Rachel” and Oscar shouts “what?” the other things hey shout to each other are not printable, but Angus is no longer the best swearer in the house !
He continues to love chewing all things wooden and guards his favourite toys by sitting on them and hissing. He still won’t let Gary sit on his play stand – but he can’t stop Oscar so has to share whether he likes it or not.
