Penny’s Training Begins.

April 25th, 2012
Penny's Training Begins.

Penny is one of our Rescue African Greys, she hates me! We have had her for 10 months now, I started to do training with her when she first arrived here but it was obvious that she didn’t like me, so I left her, just did the normal everyday things with her and talked to her lots.

Now, 10 months down the line she still hates me, so I thought I’d try training again to maybe build a bond…this is her first training session in 10 months, so we’ll see how she goes. As you can see, she is a plucker, she started growing her feathers back after arriving here and a change of diet, toys etc etc. Then my other Grey escaped from his cage one day when she was out playing and dive bombed her, she nipped her lovely new feathers off and we are back to square one, but…there is hope, she is healthy and it is just a habit, so she might stop it one day.

Even if she doesn’t….I still love her to bits.

Buster 2 Weeks In – Making Good Progress.

Buster 2 Weeks In - Making Good Progress.

Well Buster has been here just over 2 weeks now and he is doing really well.

He loves to come out of his cage and loves nothing more than sitting on the door of his cage watching the goings about of our busy house!

He has also been really good with his mutilating and has hardly touched it which is fab, he has been eating his Tidymix well, has tried Animalzone Parrot Cereal which I gave him warm with a little bit of pure Honey in it to get him to try it which he did :)

I also got him to have some warm Vita Tea which he REALLY enjoyed and was drinking it for about 5 minutes.

I can see a difference in him I think he is still pulling is feathers and down out but as long as we are making progress on the mutilating I am happy and we can work on the feathers at a later date.

Below are 2 photos one from last week and one from tonight can you see a difference?

Archies Rescue + New Home

Archies Rescue + New Home

Monday 16th April, me and Karl went to collect a lovely African grey named Archie his paronts were lovely and had always spoiled Archie, lifes commitments were getting in the way of what they felt how Archie should be treated
though he was out his cage all day and never wanted for anthing , love, attention and toys they felt he needed that someone special to spoil him even more.

This little man is nothing short of perfect, he is feather perfect, doesnt bite and will kiss and go to everyone he meets he has been taught a few tricks and will happily show them for a munch on his favorite treat a grape,he is so happy and easy goin , they just dont come along like this too often his parronts had done a fantatsic job raising him for his near 8 yrs.

Archie is already on a pellet diet and as I have said very tame and friendly so my job as a foster carer was always gonna be short,it`s his hatchday on the tues 24th April so of course it would of been nice if he could find a forever home in time to be extra spoiled!

So on that note i can announce a forum member Ann-marie is that special mummy to be , i know she will be a fantastic parront to him and he wil be extra spoiled as his old mummy always wanted him to be.

Another Rescue - Baby Felix!

Last Saturday I went to collect a lovely young grey called Felix.

Felix lived with his mum in a room in a shared house and after splitting from her boyfriend she was always out of the house so didn’t feel it was fair on Felix to be alone all that time so asked us to find him somewhere he can have company all the time.

Felix is a really happy friendly little guy he was 1 year old this month so still a baby and he is cuddly tame and has been spoilt! He really was loved by her and he loved her too! He eats Harrisons pellets and his fruit and veg.

He really is a friendly little grey and he is a treasure to look after and has the most cutest 2 pink toenails on his right foot!

Here is the little man, well he is a guy guy but little as in young :)

Meet Buster – Feather Plucker And Mutilator.

April 21st, 2012
Meet Buster - Feather Plucker And Mutilator.

On the 7th of April I collected a grey called Buster.

Buster is 8 Years old and belonged to a lovely lady on our forum who rescued him from a local rescue centre near her and he was in a awful mess with hardly any feathers and not very tame at all he was fed a diet of human foods like pizza and chips, within a few weeks she was able to stroke Buster like a cat and he soon began to feather up and look gorgeous again, It all went down hill when she went away for 2 weeks on holiday and they left Buster with her sister, who it seems Buster fell in love with big time and really bonded with her, once they had returned and Buster went home again the plucking got really bad and he didn’t stop there he mutilated his skin too to the point of it dripping with blood, he was taken to the vets a number of times, wore collars had skin scrapes done and ended up getting a infection under his wings from wearing the collar, so that had to be removed and he carried on, they tried diet changes and he is one stubborn bird he just wouldn’t eat so the vet advised them to carry on with the seed he was on to not let him loose to much weight, he would never come out of his cage when it was left open or let her tickle him at all very much which broke her heart, she even asked her sister to take him as this is what it seemed he wanted but as she worked long hours it wasn’t right or fair to do this so she contacted us after a really bad night when she came down to find he had picked himself so bad that there was blood all over the floor and perches.

When I picked Buster up she was so upset as she loved him so much and had tried so hard but it just couldn’t be her to give him what he needed I took him home got his cage out gave it a good clean to clean off any traces of blood and popped him inside.

It was rather late and as soon as I sat down we was greeted with a ‘NIGHT NIGHT’ in a REALLY deep voice it kind of freaked me out!!

We let him settle for a few days and I changed his seed to Tidymix which he ate with a bit of a strop and we opened his cage to see what would happen as he hadn’t come out for months(his wanting) and wow out he came straight away! :) not only that he stepped straight up onto Rick and my arm … Yay!!!

Here are a few photos of him –

I will be blogging about him and his progress his up’s and downs as they happen.
