Testimonial From Zulu’s Old Owners!

October 16th, 2011
Testimonial From Zulu's Old Owners!

It is a little under 4 weeks ago that we had to give our beloved Zulu up.It is not through want of trying when we made the decision to emigrate three years ago Parrots were allowed to be imported but in the long process it took us to get the visa they changed the rules so we were left with the heartbreaking decision what to do with our lovely girl Zulu?

A friend had offered to have her and although I knew she would be well fed and watered she would never be out of the cage or get the attention she is used to! I did consider zoos but again did not feel it was right so I even considered as much as I hate to say it now euthanasia as we were so worried that she would end up somewhere stressed and not cared for.

So I searched on the net and found the African Grey Parrot Centre and after just the first email I received from Paula I felt more confident about things. Paula and me communicated on several times as I really didn’t want to let Zulu go till the last minute however time came when we wanted her out before all the stress of the removals so Paula came to collect her

As soon as I met Paula I felt so confident and happy that we had done the right thing by Zulu, and I even feel she may well one day end up in a home where she gets even more spoilt than she was here! Unfortunately as often happens it was me who wanted a parrot hubby had no interest at all so she then bonded with him loved him to bits he could do anything with her shower her cuddle kiss you name it and she used to bite me!! So I lost all confidence with her but the day Paula got her back she text me to tell me she had Zulu out on her arm already so a good start me thinks!!!

I’m just hoping Paula will be able to get her language to calm down a bit rather blue at times, believe it or not we never actually taught her to say all those words but I think they tend to pick up the swearing easier than anything else .but I can honestly say that it was the hardest decision I have had to make rehoming Zulu but Paula has made me feel 100 percent happier about it and I am full of admiration for her she has young children yet still can find the time to delicate herself to rescuing parrots she is a very lovely caring girl.

We sure do miss Zulu around the house but at least now we are able to go off and start our new adventure knowing Zulu will be happy and it is so lovely being able to see her blog on the website such a brilliant idea really does bring comfort x

Update on Elvis

Update on Elvis

Well its been a while since I posted an update on Elvis so thought I better do a quick catch up. Well he is a little love and is well settled in now. He gets on with Jack and Leo really well. He is right at home and loves to sit and have his head tickled at night.

He talks loads and will happily sit on his tree stand telling me over and over again what a good boy he is.

I’m just in the process of trying to convert him to pellets – without much success at the moment – but I’ll keep try.

Anyway, thats us for now – will update you soon x

Cookie Stands His Ground!

Cookie Stands His Ground!

Hello Angela here Cookies mum,i dont seem to be doing this right as i am useless with computers i some how put in reports about cookie but not in the right place, so please bear with me i need to get help from someone who knows what they are doing,if i had a brain cell i would be dangerous!!

Anyway if anyone is lucky enough to read this Cookie is doing very well and i really hope this herbal treatment continues to help the plucking so far so good! He loves to be out of his cage and can run very fast when he has to go back in to his cage, so with those little legs going ten to the dozen and of course quite a few nips we take about 20 to 30 mins to get him into the cage.

Cookie and poppy come out together now but young poppy is rather a bossy little madam and likes to show Cookie who is boss, but now cookie is starting to stand his ground which is good! I also put poppy in her cage and give cookie some peace, mind you they both talk so well to each other in fact some days they dont know when to stop I love it :)

Must go now as cookie wants to come out, bless him,

Bye for now will update again soon

Angela,cookie and poppy.xxx

Lady, 2nd Blood Test Results!

Lady, 2nd Blood Test Results!

Lady has been doing great over the past few months, her plucking has improved and she now has a chest full of feathers, she is enjoying toys, and is enjoying time out of her cage :)

This week we were back at the vets for her follow up blood test. She had her test done on Tuesday, and today whilst taking my other birds for their blood tests, I got her results……

It’s good news :)

Her liver has improved and her white blood cell count is normal :) The vet does not want to endoscope unless she falls ill.

I’m am so pleased, as I really did not want to put her through an endoscopy! So, unless their is an emergency, Lady will not be back at the vets until her next annual blood work which will be next September :)

The parrot room is almost finished, so providing my other birds blood tests results come back the same, I will be treating Lady and my Grey to new cages, or one big double cage with devider :)

I’m so proud of Lady right now, she has made amazing progress over the last few months, part of me thinks that she has realised that she is part of my family forever. I love her to bits :)

Here is Lady back in 2010

Penny Meets Charlie

September 28th, 2011
Penny Meets Charlie

Penny is coming along nicely, she has settled in so well that we thought it was about time we let them out together to see what happens. Well, they had a bit of a beaking session, nothing too serious and they went on their merry way, doing whatever they wanted to do. So that was good, now they come out to play together all the time and so far so good, no nastiness at all. Penny let her tail feathers grow, she had four lovely long feathers unfortunately…..they got nipped off.

She continues to nip her feathers but as I’ve said before, what will be will be, I’m not going to try and stop her because I think that will put more pressure and stress on her and as long as she doesn’t start to mutilate herself by biting her skin, then maybe one day she will give up. When that day comes and if she ever flies, I will be running for cover, she absolutely hates me with every feather on her body hahaha. It’s a good job I love her to bits otherwise I could be offended by her continually lunging at me to take a chunk out of the nearest bit of my flesh.

My partner Darryl on the other hand is a different thing all together, she loves him so much she regurgitates her food (yukky) obviously not a thing to be encouraged but it is nice to know that she trusts him so much and has someone who can actually give her head scratches. I don’t quite know what I’ve done that was so wrong for her, maybe I just exist and that’s enough hahaha.

All in all Penny is doing really well, she is eating well and using some of her toys to preen, she doesn’t play with an awful lot, but just the preening part will give her feathers a bit of a rest. She’s a little darling that’s for sure, I love her to bits and I think it’s because to me she is really fiesty and stroppy that makes her so much more appealing, she is certainly her own bird and I don’t think she will be changing in a hurry.
